Red morocco binding, gilt lettering on spine, ruled gilt on cover, floral gilt inner dentelle, 5 raised bands, gilt emblems in compartments, marbled end papers, illustrated in color- 18 colored aquatint plates- drawn and etched by Henry Alken and aquatinted by E. Duncan. Condition of the book is VERY GOOD+: light wear overall to spine and covers, lower spine end a bit more worn to edges, upper corners bent, leather still supple, pages and illustrations clean, binding tight. NOTE: this volume was rebound by Reviere, possibly late 1890s, with original cloth covers and spine on pages in rear. Comes in half morocco slipcase (slight wear to spine) with detachable cloth inner sleeve. Sports, RGR.

Williams. 6 1/2 x 10 1/2 in. xvii, with preface, errata, contents, index of illustrations, and 298 pgs of text, plus adverts on single pg. In original green cloth binding with blind-stamped rules and decoration on cover with gilt otter devouring a salmon, mermaid on back cover, and gilt lettering and eagle on spine. 13 color lithographs and 9 B&W vignettes, all accounted for in this copy. RARE original cloth binding of the first printing of this desirable book. A custom clamshell case has been made for it c. 1920, in dark green linen with the title in gilt lettering on spine, with 1843 date, a very nice case is very good condition, lined in matching green paper. Illustrations by L. Haghe, T. Landseer and S. Williams from paintings by Sir David Wilkie, Edwin Landseer, Charles Landseer, William Simson, and Edward Cook. Condition of the book is VERY GOOD ; corners are bumped as are ends of spine. Very little edge wear, covers very clean with a few slightly paler areas to front. Spine is slightly faded, with 1" tear to upper rear of spine. Front hinge is slightly weak, with fine crack inside, ditto rear hinge, though it is much firmer. Mild foxing to endpapers and some pgs, also to the borders of the illustrations, though the illustrations themselves are very clean and good. Text overall very clean and fresh, and binding very solid with no loose pgs. In brown ink at top of title pg is the name Augustus Frederick Thistelhwayte, Dec 14th, 1880. A lovely copy in rare original binding, and carefully stored for nearly a century in a fine clamshell case.

6 x 9 1/2 in. Vol 1 - dedication pg, preface, list of plates, 535 pgs, plus 1 pg on 'Coursing'. Vol 2 - 378 pgs, plus pg on the publication with list of plates on the other side. Vol 3 (supplementary volume) contents, list of plates, 356 pgs. Deep cobalt blue full calf with gilt outer dentelle and tooled decorative border inside, 4 raised bands on spine with gilt lettering and ruled compartments. Marbled sides to text block. A contemporary binding. Vol 1 contains the requisite prints - title pg plus 19 plates, some are fold-out, Vol 2 and 3 contain the requisite title pg plys 42 plates. All are present as called for. First edition. Condition of books is GOOD ; corners, edges and sides of spine rubbed and somewhat worn, outer joints are just slightly cracked, as leather is a bit dry there. Covers evince some light scuffing, but the leather is lovely to the touch and blue still rich with no spots or fading. Bindings are tight in vols 1 and 2, ever so slighly loose in 3. Vol 1 has tear to lower rear spine and vol 3 to upper front. All spines have lost most of their gilding. All vols show mild foxing, to text and plates, but it is sporadic, with many pgs having no foxing at all, while the plates all have mild to moderate foxing. First signature in Vol 1 is detached, but present. A classic in a lovely, contemporary binding. Sport. RGR.
