Springfield, Il., 1907. First edition. 242pp. Illus., 20 ports, maps, views. facs. Original decorated cloth.. One of 500 copies printed. Unknown to Howes, Dornbusch, Nicholson and Nevins. Chapters VII - IX deal with his life in the Civil War as a doctor with a Iowa Regiment. He saw the Battle of Prairie Grove in Arkansas, surrender of Vicksburgh, Shelby's raid repulsed, and discusses Quantrill's Raid, and the burning and massacre of Lawrence, Kansas. He also reports on Pilot Knob, released prisoners from Andersonville, and his commissions from Lincoln. A rare and virtually unknown Civil War personal narrative.

Clark: Travels in the New South 1:89: "This is a grandiose description of a projected railway which was later built as the Florida East Coast. For almost three hundred pages the authors proclaimed the economic might of the nation, the Ohio Valley, the South, and the future of Florida. There is a good amount of statistical material, reviews of the history and progress of other railways, and the action of the Florida legislature. The large folding map shows the railway system of the eastern half o the United States, with the Great Southern route projected from Millen, Georgia to Key West." The map was a Julius Bien photo litho, showing eastern U.S. from the Great Lakes to Venezuela with an inset of the entire U.S. south to the Amazon. Very scarce and important work and map.
