First Edition. Pale blue boards, gilt titled at the spine [mildly faded, the gilt still bright]. Louis Marlow, [Crowley's Literary Executor] satirist, whose criticism of life cuts deep. "This is a book with ingredients both sweet and astringent, written by a man who has thought deeply, acted independently, reflected sagely, and is able to set down in bold, lucid, vivid paragraphs a life-time of rich and impassioned experience." & according to the author, the essays in this book have something to offend everyone. Presentation copy with a lengthy inscription by the author on the half title: "For / Aleister Crowley - With apologies for / the very imperfect / sketch of him / herein attempted. / From / Louis Marlow / And now in April 1946. Deirdre MacAlpine / April 1948". Description:
1863 GHOSTS 1ed Discovery Ghouls Occult Spirits George Cruikshank Caricature ArtGeorge Cruikshank was one of the most prolific book illustrators of 19th-century England. His caricature illustrations most famously appeared in some of the works of Charles Dickens. He regularly depicted English life and satirized politics and social customs, especially slavery and abolitionist reforms. Being disturbed by the American spiritualist and séance fad going around he applied his satire to the idea of ghosts claiming that clearly it was all a hoax as ghosts always appear clothed and for that to be true clothes would have to be a part of the soul, which can only be absurd.
This 1863 first edition includes 9 black and white woodcuts of varying sizes throughout!

1694 Macrobius Saturnalia Dream Scipio Occult Pagan Philosophy Astronomy Vellum"Good laws are produced by bad actions."
– Macrobius, Saturnalia
Macrobius was a 5th-century Roman scholar known for his works of Platonism during the Middle Ages. His most well-known and remembered works are 'Somnium Sciponis', or 'Commentary on Cicero's Dream of Scipio' and 'Saturnalia' which is a collection of Roman religious anecdotes and historical sketches.
'Commentary on Dream of Scipio' was the most widely cited and referenced book in the Middle Ages. It is important for giving astronomical distances – one of the earliest estimations of the diameter of the sun. His anti-Christian approach to philosophy was evident in 'Dream' as he sought to describe Creation in a stoic pseudo-scientific manner. According to Shirley,
"His Neo-platonic commentary on Cicero includes, among many references to the pseudo-sciences, a geographic concept which is different from that of Ptolemy. The inhabited world north of the… Read More

binding is very clean- just a touch of edgewear/shelfwear. They used a two tone quarter green cloth over gray cloth and the green portion still is glossy. Internals very clean ( not even any pricing marks in pencil) though there is a paper clip indentation at the lower edge affecting the title, onwards for 20 pages. Unclipped wrapper has only some rubbing but I detect no tears, creases or chips. The paper is wonderful; it strikes me as feeling and looking like "linen" (not your business/office grade) but I am by no means an expert on paper. WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).
