Illustrated by Hugh Thomas, and edition colloqually known as "The Peacock Edition," though in a variant binding that has no elaborate gilt peacock to the front cover. Very Good with lean to binding, wear to corners and spine ends, chipping and rubbing tot title label, cloth lightly stained, small area of wear to cloth at top of rear spine joint. Former owner name to front free endpaper, pages tanned and lightly foxed.

First edition thus, American issue with Macmillan imprint at base of spine. 476pp. Bound in publisher's dark green cloth stamped with an ornate gilt peacock design, illustrated by Hugh Thomson, all edges gilt. Very Good+ with lean to binding, light bump to bottom edge of rear board and faint staining to rear board, front and rear inner hinges with webbing exposed, tear to edge of front free endpaper, contents browned.

One of 250 copies finely bound First fully illustrated edition, one of 250 large paper copies issued in the UK with the illustrations specially printed on China paper and laid down; a further 25 copies were released in the US. This was the first edition to feature illustrations accompanying the text, as Bentley's 1833 edition and subsequent printings had featured only a frontispiece. Thomson's "light touch and feeling for period manners provide a charming and accessible gloss to the author's work" (ODNB). Octavo (258 x 178 mm). Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in dark green morocco, spine lettered gilt, peacock feather with burgundy morocco onlaid piece in each compartment separated by raised bands, front board elaborately gilt-blocked with peacock design and burgundy morocco onlaid pieces, decoration to turn-ins gilt, burgundy endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed.
