The author was Piotr Feliksovich Maevsky (1851-1892). Significant edgewear to cover, internally sound with minimal tanning of paper. Owner's signature and oil spot on ffep (M. Kirshbaum?), another on end paper (V. Rikovshky?) with oaktree bookplate of Heino Ross. Spine sl. frayed at top edge, some insect damage to glued areas. The text contains keys to genera and species, generic descriptions and Russian and Latin names of genera and species, summaries of distribution (by local government region) and habitat, flowering times, and selected line drawings mostly showing both the whole plant and flowers or fruits. Philadelphia: Printed by James Kay, Jun. & Brother, 1837. Very Good +. [1], 140-203, [1] p.; 29 cm. Disbound from a larger volume. Read before the Society on April 4, 1834. Thomas Nuttall (1786-1859) was an English botanist who trained as a printer, but was encouraged to follow his interest in botany after coming to Philadelphia in the early 19th century. He spent much of the rest of his life studying the flora and fauna of the United States, publishing Manual of the Ornithology of the United States and of Canada, heading the botanical gardens at Harvard University, and working at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. This is one of several important papers of that were published in the Transactions of the American Philosophical Society. Scarce. In Very Good+ Condition: disbound from a larger volume; final leaf largely detached from text block; minimal foxing; otherwise, clean and bright.

Attractive grey pictorial cloth with gilt title to spine, and green printed title to front with block printed scene of trees and sheep in green and black. No dustjacket, probably as issued. 230pp. With colour plate frontispiece from painting, tissue-guarded , and 14 b&w plates reproducing paintings, as well as line engraved vignettes at end of each chapter. The author's account of her move to live in a cottage in a traditional country village in Hampshire, with chapters on her garden, village life and people, and rural labourers. Very Good. Bright clean covers with light wear to edges, tiny crease to to front corner. Pages have occasional light browning and marks, heavier browning to prelims and closed edges.

Vienna: Schrämblischen, 1817. Image is 8 1/8 inches by 6 1/4 inches on a sheet that is 9 1/16 inches by 7 1/8 inches. Drawn and engraved by pharmacist turned naturalist Ferdinand Vietz ((1772-1815) and published in volume 7 of Icones Plantarum Medico-Oeconomico-Technologicarum, edited by J. L. Kerndl and published by Schrämblischen in Vienna in 1818. Original hand-coloring. Like all the plates from Vietz's classic work on medicinal uses of plants, this is a lovely original print on high-quality watermarked laid paper. Condition is very good: clean and bright.
