Inscribed copy to American film director (and fellow pilot) Tay Garnett (1894 - 1977). Spanning nearly 60 years, Garnett's scriptwriting and directing career moved from the silents to the heyday of the Hollywood motion picture studio to television; of the hundreds of projects he either wrote or directed, he is best known for directing the American noir classic The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946). As a young man he served as Naval Air pilot in WWI and worked as a cartoonist before finding work as a title writer for Mack Sennett Studios. By the time sound came along, he was directing feature theatricals. Garnett and Udet met while Garnett was directing SOS Iceberg (1933). CONDITION: Very good, minimal wear, moderate foxing throughout. The scarce, first edition of this influential work advocating the use of whole grain flour for bread-making. Reverend Sylvester Graham (1794-1851) was a vegetarian and the inventor of "Graham bread," known to us today in the rather corrupted form of the Graham cracker. His advocacy of whole grains and vegetables gave rise to a diet reform movement with strong moralistic overtones: "In the 1830s, critiques of American food and eating were rampant and shrill, and usually attached to the name of Sylvester Graham, the de facto founder of the diet reform movement in the antebellum United States. During the 1830s and 1840s, the man Ralph Waldo Emerson described as the 'prophet of bran bread' made a name for himself lecturing and publishing books on diet and proper living...The diet reform… Read More

Pré Nian Editions. folio (15 1/8 x 11 inches). loose signatures gathered in a paper wrapper, grey linen clamshell box. (28) pages. Printed in an edition limited to 60 copies, on Johannot paper, each copy signed by the poet and the artist. Description:
Rising from sandbars on the Platte River with clarion calls, the sandhill crane (Grus canadensis) feels the urgency of spring migration. Elegant, noble, and spiritual, the sandhill crane is one of the most ancient of all birds. More than a half-million strong, flying in squadrons, these majestic creatures point northward to their Arctic and sub-Arctic breeding ranges. Theirs is an epic story of endurance through the ages. With 153 stunning color photographs, On Ancient Wings presents sandhill cranes in their wild but increasingly compromised habitats today. Over the course of five years, Michael Forsberg documented the tall gray birds in habitats ranging from the Alaskan tundra, to the arid High Plains, from Cuban nature preserves to suburban backyards. With an eye for beauty and an uncommon persistence, the author documents the cranes' challenges to adapt and survive in a rapidly changing natural world. Forsberg argues that humankind, for its own sake, should secure the cranes' place in the future.… Read More
