E. von Freyhold. Celebrated for its depth of feeling and delicate coloration and composition, these series of illustrations by Freyhold are among the finest to be found in any Jugendstil books of the period. A book seldom found without repairs, this copy is completely unsophisticated with all plates clean and bright. The spine has some slight fraying on top and bottom, corners slightly chipped and hinges only starting to weaken with some separation. Covers show some wear and soiling, yet a very nice copy indeed, in its original state of a book many consider to be among the finest representation of Jugendstil art.

Light edge wear with corners lightly bumped, slightest evidence of faint foxing and hand-soiling, else a generally clean, tight, copy.
Second edition, the first having been published in 1810 at a length of just 92 pages. This second edition, according to the catalog of the publisher, Nepveu, was produced at only 445 copies without or with engravings on the cover. The edition is limited to 975 numbered copies and 25 lettered review copies, all signed by Mr. Frasconi, Mr. Wescott, and Mr. Blumenthal. This copy is one of the 25 lettered copies (copy number "F"). Four fabulous and detailed double-page pop-up scenes, plus full and partial page black & white illustrations throughout. The boards are ever so lightly soiled else this is a fine copy with fine pop-ups. The scarce dustwrapper is present; it lightly browned with age else near fine. A nice copy of an early Disney work.

London: Hodder and Stoughton Limited, 1924 A good to very good copy of the 1st edition - the 'edition du luxe' - in dark blue decorative cloth binding, signed by Kay Nielsen. With 12 tipped-in colour plates, 16 full page black and white plates and numerous designs by Nielsen. This was Nielsen's third book illustration, begun in 1912 but not published until 1924 because of the disruption caused by World War I. It is a beautiful and expensive production, but the changing market for colour plate books meant that it had to have fewer colour plates than Nielsen's earlier works. This book is number 378 of 500 printed. The blue cloth binding has bright gilt decoration and titles to the front board and spine. The front board is bright and clean with light corner and edge wear. The spine is dulled with a lot of pulling to the top and bottom, and the back board is clean but with some scuff marks and light corner and edge wear. The First 2 years of the LONDON Publication of "The TALE of PETER RABBIT" have reference books about the various Printings/evolution of changes. I'm fascinated by it myself. Now, excluding the impossible First Private Printings in Late 1901 & Early 1902 from the realm of possibility for we mere mortals, the First few Original Warne Trade Printings are one of my joys to study - and even more to Find! Most collector's know that the First few Warne Printings (late 1902 - mid 1903) were done with patterned leaf end papers and had 97 pages with all illustrations in Color (Private Printings were B&W). The distinction between the printings was the Board Color. The last of these 4 printings changed "wept" to "shed". NOTE: NONE of These Printings had a COPYRIGHT DATE (on the rear of the Title Page)!
