Infinite Jest

by Wallace, David Foster

THIS BOOK IS CURRENTLY ON HOLD FOR A CUSTOMER. Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1996. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. A Fine copy (a touch of soil to front of page block, a little excess glue where top of page block meets spine, expected gap at the top between page block and spine), in a Fine dust jacket, SIGNED BY DAVID FOSTER WALLACE on the title page. A Fine Copy of David Foster Wallace's magnum opus, Infinite Jest. Foster, as was his custom, lined through his printed name on the title page at the time he signed the book. Wallace's second novel, a highly original satire that brought the young author to great fame. The novel takes its name from Shakespeare's Hamlet (“Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio: a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy: he hath borne me on his back a thousand times; and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is!” - “Hamlet,” Act V, Scene 1), and the title refers to a movie, Infinite Jest, sought by terrorists for its debilitating effect on viewers, producing great enjoyment that can lead even to death. As described by Bruce Weber in the New York Times (on September 18, 2008, shortly after Wallace's death), the book "perceives American society as self-obsessed, pleasure-obsessed and entertainment-obsessed. (The president, Johnny Gentle, is a former singer.) The book attracted a cult of fans (and critics too) for its subversive writing, which was by turns hallucinogenically stream of consciousness, jubilantly anecdotal, winkingly sardonic and self-consciously literary." In 2006, Michiko Kakutani, chief book critic of the New York Times, wrote: "David Foster Wallace can do practically anything if he puts his mind to it. He can do sad, funny, silly, heartbreaking and absurd with equal ease; he can even do them all at once.” Wallace won a MacArthur Foundation grant (the "genius award") the year following the book's publication. Signed copies of the first edition in hardcover are uncommon, and are especially so when in a condition this nice. A Fine copy, SIGNED BY DAVID FOSTER WALLACE.  THIS BOOK IS CURRENTLY ON HOLD FOR A CUSTOMER.

London: Cassell & Company, 1935. First Edition. First edition of Lawrence Durrell's first novel. Highly autobiographical in character, an apprentice effort, Durrell's novel sank largely without trace. And as with so many unsold titles, the majority of copies were destroyed during the Blitz. "Pied Piper of Lovers" is part of a loose trilogy with Durrell's subsequent novels, "Panic Spring" and "The Black Book." Blue boards with the barest hint of rubbing to edges; no dustjacket, spine incorrectly lettered Pied Pipers of Lovers, bookseller's price on front free endpaper, slight spotting to fore and top-edges, otherwise a clean, solid, well-preserved copy of Lawrence's exceedingly scarce first novel.

New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence.
