Publication was transferred to Amsterdam the following year, with the second edition published by François L'Honoré. The 3rd edition was published by the brothers Chatelain, and subsequent editions (including the 7th, offered here) were edited by Henri Philippe de Limiers, a heraldist born in the Netherlands of French parents towards the end of the 17th century. He also published the annals of the French monarchy, including the annals of King Louis XIII and King Louis XIV. The success of La Science des personnes de Cour is evidenced by new editions published by Pierre Massuet through the 1750s. The small encyclopedia is a compendium of knowledge for life in the royal court, with essential information including astronomy, geography, government, civil and military architecture, diplomacy, law, philosophy, religion, history, and warfare. The last chapters include an overview of heraldry as well as heroic and moral fables, and offers advice regarding behavior at the royal court. Spine with gilt ruled lines, floral design and lettering. Front board with ruled panels and floral designs, all in gilt Single gilt ruled border to the rear board and board edges. Gilt inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Armorial bookplate of noted author of books on folklore and topography, Sir George Laurence Gomme (1853 - 1916) on the front pastedown. Some offsetting to the endpapers from the leather turn-ins. A little rubbing to the extremities and the spine faded to an attractive brown but overall still a lovely copy of this scarce work in a fine quality binding. The binding is unsigned but is certainly the work of a master bookbinder.

I have only found 5 copies in libraries worldwide. Size: 4mo - over 9 3/4" - 12" tall. Text is in Italian. About 1/3 of the spine has been chipped away at the top, and the outer paper cover is gone from most of the rest of it. Both hinges are cracked about the same distance along the top of the spine. Three volumes in four translated from the last Paris edition by Rev. C. Moore, Vol. 1: 243, Vol. 2 & 3: 186, 187-288 and Vol. 4: xi-[15]16-334pp., illustrated with several hundred engravings (356 full page engravings including the three frontispieces and one folding facsimile letter with a repair), bound in full tree calf, board edges decorated with a gilt roll, raised bands, double red morocco labels gilt, fully gilt decorated, top edges gilt, with the bookplate of Earl of Cromer (Evelyn Baring, 1841-1917) the British Consul-General in Egypt and a member of the influential Baring banking family. Joints lightly rubbed, closed tear to upper margin of page 90, monkey plate following page 125 has half of the folding plate lacking. A few small chips to heads but still quite nice.

Paris : Claude Barbin , 1695 A fair to good set in 2 volumes, in contemporary full leather binding.M Jean de la Quintinye was trained as a lawyer, but is famed for his skills in kitchen gardening. He was commissioned by Louis XIV to create a new kitchen garden for Versailles - which can still be visited today. He is said to be the first gardener to advocate pruning young fruit trees hard to ensure better growth and fruiting for the future. This set is in contemporary speckled calf bindings with raised bands and gilt decoration and titles to spines. The bindings are sound but worn, with wear to corners, edges and the top and bottom of the spines. The gilt is particularly worn on Vol I. Vol II has some cracking to the top of the front joint. Both have some library numbers to the front pastedowns and a small early ink signature to the fep. Both have a round stamp of the 'Societe de Lecture de Geneve' to the title page. Receipts for four simultaneous purchases of wine from the Bordeaux wine merchant Maison Clossman, each for delivery to a different palace of Emperor Napoleon III: Palais des Tuileries, Palais de L'Elysée, Palais de St. Cloud, Palais de Fontainebleau. The items are numbered across the four invoices in consecutive order, with one hundred seven items in all, most large quantities in barrels or cartons of fifty bottles each. The fourth and final invoice contains an additional stamp in green ink, "Maison de [ill.], Service de la Regie de Palais de Fontainbleu". Folded, with creases. Near fine.

Famed full-color frontispiece is intact, as is tipped-in protective tissue. All eight B&W engravings are intact, including frontispiece. (Plate on page 97 has a deckled bottom edge.)Spine is discolored and darker than rest of jacket, with slight wear on heel and top. Pages are age tanned and have small stains. Two of the pages are uncut.All four endpapers are significantly discolored with a black waxy substance (see photos), something like crayon.
