Good solid bindings. Volume one has light rippling to the pages and foxing up to page 3, hole to front free endpaper and three small holes to leading blank, Volume II is very clean throughout. Engraved bookplate to front endpapers (Charles Grave Hudson - 1st Baronet Hudson, of Wanlip Hall, Leicestershire.) The first edition of one of Voltaire's most important works, a landmark in the development of historiography, published under the alternative pseudonym M. de Francheville. A very nice example. Paris: Le Fuel, 1809 A very good copy in full red morocco binding with card slip case in matching binding. With 6 black and white plates and additional vignette illustrations. The case is of a card case design in red morocco leather with a gilt border of leaves and flowers. The front has gilt titles and gilt compartments and the rear has a gilt chain design. It is clean and complete with some wear to corners and darkening in some places. The book has a matching binding which is in near fine condition, with just slight darkening where it fits into the case. All page edges gilt. Alexis Godillot (1816-1893) was a contemporary of Louis Vuitton (1821-1892) and first achieved renown in Paris for his beautiful hand-made luggage. With a workshop situated just a few blocks away from Vuitton's, this catalogue comes from this very early period of Godillot's life before he had revolutionised footwear by differentiating the moulding of the left shoe from the right and become the famous shoemaker who would go on to equip over one hundred thousand French soldiers for The Crimean War. 'Godillot' remains a slang French term for 'boot' to this day.
