About This Item
a) Report of the [CPGB] Commission on Inner Party Democracy. The Communist Party, London, January 1957. 8vo. (215 x 140 mm), 60 pages. Paper wraps, cover and pages age-toned with very minor tears to cover edges. The cover has been re-attached with archival tape. Internally clean and unmarked.
The full report of the party's Commission on Inner Party Democracy which also contains the important Minority Report presented by some members of the Commission. Party members seeking greater internal democracy, as a necessary step to begin to divest the party of its Stalinist past, coalesced around the Minority Report for which Christopher Hill (the English Marxist historian and later Master of Baliol College, Oxford University) acted as spokesperson. The 25th CPGB Congress rejected the arguments of the Minority Report, leading to the party losing considerable numbers of members for whom the outcome was unacceptable. A key document in the history of the CPGB. (see also item 1a)
(b) Inner Party Democracy. The Communist Party, London, [republished] 1975. Published in accordance with the Resolution adopted by the 25th Congress of the Communist Party (April 19-22, 1957). 8vo. (218 x 140 mm), 32 pages. Paper wraps, age-toned and slightly soiled. Text with some critical marginal pencil notes and underlining otherwise clean. Good condition.
The result of the work of an internal CPGB Commission on Inner-Party Democracy (item 2a) which became a focal point for a fierce internal debate over party democracy and the need to move away from a classical Marxist-Leninist centralised form of political organisation.
(c) Inner Party Democracy. The Communist Party, London, n.d., published following the 36th Congress of the Communist Party (November 10-13, 1979). 8vo. (200 x 125 mm), 31 pages. Paper wraps. Text clean. Very good condition.
The 1977 35th CPGB Congress set up a new Commission on internal structure and democracy which reported to the 36th Congress. With echoes of the 1956-7 debates, the major divide was between those members seeking greater internal democracy and those resistant to fundamental change. This new text is markedly different in its approach compared to its predecessor – see 2(a) – however it did not resolve the internal debate which would resurface in the mid-1980s.If postage is less than the average cost quoted in my store listings any over-payment will be refunded.
