About This Item

We are most pleased to offer several archival lots of the papers of scholar, mathematician, statistician and economist, Harold Hotelling covering a period of nearly 70 years. His work is quite well known and perhaps to best familiarize or refresh yourself with it, we have prepared two biographical sketches in pdf format for the asking. These lots are broken down into several categories as follows with pdf files likewise provided for those interested: (1) Items written by, written to, written about, belonging to and presented to Harold Hotelling; (2) Items written by, written to, written about, belonging to and presented to Susanna Hotelling, the second wife of Harold Hotelling, likewise a scholar in her own right; (3) Items regarding the Hotelling's historic 1939 / 1940 trip to India; (4) Items written by, written to, or written about, friends and relatives of Harold and Susanna Hotelling; (5) A miscellany of other items. While these lots most likely contain some items that may not be unique and hence can be acquired elsewhere, many if not most of them indeed are unique and can only be found among this grouping. Among the highlights of this marvelous archive are over 55 letters from Hotelling; two large leather bound volumes entitled Selected Papers of Harold Hotelling which is unique; Hotelling's various diplomas of higher learning, from elementary school to Ph.D.; an INSCRIBED photo of former Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn; a SIGNED document by his mentor Eric Temple Bell aka science fiction writer John Taine from 1920; a file of letters between Hotelling & James E. Webb which are of historical significance as they are almost certainly a direct link to the beginnings of McCarthyism; a 4 page SIGNED typed letter from Pierpaolo Luzzato Fegiz, professor of statistics at the University of Trento as well as another one page typed letter to Susanna Hotelling; a holographic letter SIGNED by fellow mathematician and scholar Howard Levene: 5 Letters from such Indian mathematical scholars as P. C. Mahalanobis; 2 SIGNED letters from Jawaharlal Nehru; A holograph letter SIGNED and dated April, 1929 to Susanna Edmondson from surrealist artist Spanish Urbano Lugris; a SIGNED letter by famous editor / author H. L. Mencken to same; a holographic 2 page letter SIGNED Ê and dated 9/23/1938 by mathematician William Gemmell Cochran; 3 SIGNED letters from renowned economist Frank Knight of the University of Chicago; a holographic 90 word letter in French SIGNEDÊ and dated 5/6/1942 by internationally known French mathematician & scientist Jaques Hadamard; a TYPED LETTER SIGNED dated 5/28/1976 to Sue Hotelling from mathematician, statistician and economist, Gerhard Tintner, etc. The archives themselves include many photos, journals, diaries, ledgers, essays, invitations, pamphlets, certificates, offprints, abstracts, letters, genealogies, newspaper clippings, biographies, personal artifacts, travel documents, addresses, speeches, broadsides, etc. An educator as well as researcher, Milton Friedman is just one of many students of Harold Hotteling who taught at the most prestigious universities in the U.S. All in all, a chance to purchase a unique archive and gain insight into the personal and academic life of this famous economist / statistician.

About THE FINE BOOKS COMPANY

The Fine Books Company, which began purchasing rare and collectible items in 1976 and selling same in 1979, is located everywhere a computer may be accessed. A 34 year member of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America and The International League of Antiquarian Booksellers, we have travelled to, purchased and sold books on, every continent ( save Antarctica as we are unaware of any commercial book activity there). Although we may be biased towards the fields of creativity, namely all genres of fiction in first edition, we have branched out to include many areas of non-fiction as well so that our stock of over 40,000 items, which includes books, periodicals, letters and manuscripts, is now more balanced than it has ever been before. We issue occasional virtual catalogues (which only reveal a small portion of our newest inventory), quickly reply to all inquiries, do appraisals upon request and somehow have managed to publish 18 books along the way. A "Heritage" member of AbeBooks as well, our specialty is service.
