About This Item
New York: Alfred A. Knopf. Very Good- in Good dust jacket. 1944. Hardcover. An early, wartime edition (1944) of Joseph Kessel's novel which presents various harrowing incidents and anecdotes experienced by those participating in the clandestine French resisitance to Nazi occupiers in France during World War II. Though ficticious in this work, the events are based on real-life events and people. Because the war was still raging and resistance forces were in constant jeopardy, the actual events and descriptions of actors were modified. Translated from the French by Haakon Chevalier. This work was adapted in a 1969 movie directed by Jean-Pierre Melville. --- In blue cloth-covered boards with image of a Nazi soldier about to be stabbed by a shadowy figure in silver to cover; spine titling in silver and red topstain. Volume wrapped in jacket with image of six shadowy figures marching across a moonlit landscape. --- With sunning to edges of cloth and moderate age-toning to leaves, else a sound, tightly-bound copy. Good-only jacket with chips, tears, age-toning and darkening to spine; a large chunk of the DJ is missing at lower spine area; wrapped in removable archival mylar protector.; 12mo - 7 to 7-1/2 in. tall; vii, 3-160 pages .
