About This Item

London: S. O. Beeton, 1861. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 7.5" by 5". Not Stated. The first edition, first impression of this important and comprehensive work on household management and cooking by Mrs Isabella Beeton. The first edition, first impression of this work, with 18 Bouverie St stated to the illustrated title page, and the farmyard frontispiece.Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, colour illustrated title page, twelve colour plates, and in-text engravings. Collated and complete.Isabella Beeton's comprehensive guide to cookery, with a wide variety of recipes, advice for the organisation of kitchens and larders, marketing, and a calendar of food in season. She also gave advice on table decorations, how to wait a table, how to set a table, and how to carve meats and fish. Some of the recipes included vary from meat, poultry, salads, tarts, cold sweets, sandwiches, bread, jams, and icing. This is an interesting look at life in a Victorian household, and the running of it.Beeton's work was originally serialised as 'The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine' in twenty-four monthly instalments in 'The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine', her husband's publication. Her work has been constantly expanded over time, and is still in print. In half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, sound, with some shelf wear to the boards and rubbing to the joints, spine, and extremities. A small amount of loss to the spine label. Internally, hinges have been reinforced and binding is firm. A few spots to the pages, which are otherwise bright and clean. Very Good
