About This Item
Tight, square spine has some cosmetic creasing. Clean, unmarked interior. Some very minor shelf-wear and toning to the pages. 'Outside, the rain is coming furiously,' Rechy writes in this classic hustling chronicle that a contemporary New York Times review said ''show[s] the grubby, lonely, nearly psychotic underside of such a life.' The unnamed narrator 'stand[s] under the marquee wondering where to go. . . . reacting instinctively to this world, studying the stances of other obviously drifting youngmen.' The book, which would go on to inspire My Own Private Idaho, gets a Ballantine mass-market treatment here with a cover that's a colorized, only slightly more sexy riff on the Grove Press first edition. Texas-born Rechy, who was influenced by sources ranging from comic books to Dostoevsky to Margaret Mitchell, retired from cruising at the ripe age of 60 and now lives in domestic bliss with raunchy-comedy producer Michael Ewing, watched over in their Encino home by outsize lithographs of Joan Crawford and Marlene Dietrich. 380 pp.
