This is the "hotel novel" as it has become to be called, and it shows that odd dichotomy of Lewis that is the decisional measuring stick separating those who love Lewis and those who don't. Here is the story of an artist set against the story of a hotel clerk and here is Lewis equating art and hotel management. Most critics feel that this is not Lewis at his best because of this equation, that in setting out to talk about art, he ends up knee-deep in the hotel business. Of course, this misses the point. Some Of These Stories Were Read On Cbc Radio On 'Stories With John Drainie." Garner Immigrated From Yorkshire With His Family As A Child. In The 1930'S He Rode The Rails Before Volunteering In The Spanish Civil War. He Apparently Had A Falling Out With Jack Mcclelland And Switched Publishers To Ryerson, Who Were The Publishers Of This Collection. Very Good Butter Yellow Boards With Black Stamped Titles, No Writing Or Marks, Clean And Square. Dust Jacket Is Unclipped But Quite Tattered.

Octavo; vii, 216pp. In contemporary half leather over green cloth boards (a little rubbed and worn, remnants of early paper label to head of spine), five raised spine bands, gilt lettered leather spine label to second compartment, all page edges marbled, contemporary ink inscription to front blank, early library blind-stamp to first two leaves ('William Todd and Co. Library, Limerick'), light foxing to opening and closing leaves, unobtrusive light paper browning and occasional spots ans stains otherwise internally clean. The title page bears no date but the publisher's address and book's typography place it in the late 1850s to early 1860s. Very good early example of this American novel of the civil war era.
