About This Item

London: Faber and Faber, 1974. Hardcover. Very Good/Near Fine. First edition. Edited by John Montague. Octavo. 400pp. Dark green cloth spine stamped in gilt. Very good with some soiling to the top of the text block and discoloration on the pastedown from the binder's glue, which is typical for this title, in near fine lightly soiled dust jacket with small rub spot on the front edge. Advance Review Copy with publisher's slip. The ink owner name of Irish scholar and friend of Montague's, Colin L. McElvie, on the first page. McElvie wrote a letter to the *Irish Times* to defended Montague's editing after reading its unfavorable review of this book. Laid in is an Autograph Letter Signed by Montague on University College, Cork letterhead, dated May 3 1976, in which he thanks McElvie for his published letter and discussed other reviews of his books. Also laid in are various newspaper clipping about this book, an anthology of Irish verse which features a 19-page essay ("In the Irish Grain") by Montague, four poems by Seamus Heaney and numerous contributions of ancient and modern poets, including Jonathan Swift, Owen Roe O'Sullivan, Thomas Moore, W. B. Yeats, James Stephens, Padraic Colum, Samuel Beckett, Derek Mahon, Eavan Boland, and others. An interesting association copy.
