About This Item

A small piece missing to upper spine of dustjacket; with some chipping and edgewear and a couple of short tears; price clipped. Inscribed, which reads: "Inscribed for Mary Louise and John Lilly. Cordially, Robinson Jeffers. Tor House, Carmel, California. December, 1936." John Robinson Jeffers (January 10, 1887 January 20, 1962) was an American poet, known for his work about the central California coast. Much of Jeffers' poetry was written in narrative and epic form, but he is also known for his shorter verse and is considered an icon of the environmental movement. Influential and highly regarded in some circles, despite or because of his philosophy of "inhumanism, " Jeffers believed that transcending conflict required human concerns to be de-emphasized in favor of the boundless whole. John Cunningham Lilly (January 6, 1915 September 30, 2001) was an American physician, neuroscientist, psychoanalyst, psychonaut, philosopher, writer and inventor. He was a researcher of the nature of consciousness using mainly isolation tanks, dolphin communication, and psychedelic drugs, sometimes in combination. Mary Louise "Crouch" was his wife. A unique association copy.
