The inscription refers to Smith's play 'Dear Octopus', which was revived in 1967 for the fiftieth wedding anniversary of the comedy actors Dame Cicely Courtneidge and Jack Hubert. Dodie Smith's married name, 'Mrs Beesley', Dodie Smith's married name is also written in ink in another hand to the front flap of the dust jacket. Additionally a postcard from the author is loosely inserted: 'Dearest Cis, Here is "The Starlight Barking" as a tiny first night present. The original engravings are by: Alberto Beltran, Alfredo Zalce, Francisco Mora, Gabriel Fernandez Ledesma and Leopoldo Mendez. Each of the engravings is pencil signed. This is a spiral bound softcover book. The spine shows no sign of wear, all the corners are square, and the pages are clean and unmarked. A previous owners name is written in ink on the half title page; therefore, this is a near fine copy.

First edition, first impression (Collins Clear-Type Press: London and Glasgow, 1958). Signed and inscribed by the author to the front endpaper: "To Nina, with best wishes, Michael Bond". The dedicatee is Nina Froud who was a personal friend of the author and worked at his literary agency. The first book in the Paddington series where one of the most iconic and beloved British fictional characters first appeared, later going on to form the basis of several ongoing TV and successful film adaptations. A digital photo of Golding with a UK bookseller at a 1992 booksigning event is laid-in RITES. RITES has two small indentations on the front pastedown upper corner with two corresponding impressions on the dustjacket flap and a small rubbed spot on the topedge which has caused a tiny nick on the topedge of a few text pages; the book is in Near Fine condition in a Near Fine dustjacket with an archival cover. Very minor rubbing to hinges and a small bump to the lower front board at the outer corner, but overall a beautiful clean copy of this classic. Among the very best of Rackham's work.
