The illustrated Albion edition of Thomas Ingoldsby's famous legends in a sumptuous John Bumpus tree calf binding. A popular collection of myths, legends, ghost stories, and poetry by English clergyman Richard Harris Barham, published under pen-pane Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor. First serialised in 1837, they became an immediate success and remained popular through the nineteenth century. Featuring the poem 'The Jackdaw of Rheims,' as well as early transcriptions of the song 'A Flanklyn's Dogge.'The "Albion Edition" with eighteen illustrations by Cruikshank, Leech, and others, and a portrait frontispiece. Dated from a copy held at the National Library of Wales on Jisc. Prize binding signed John Bumpus from Elstree School awarded to J. R. J. Taylor in 1897. In a full tree calf binding with five raised bands, gilt tooling to spine, titles in gilt to morocco spine label, marbled edges and endpapers. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear only light chipping to tail of spine, cracking to front joint, board holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Very Good
