VG condition in early (first?) binding of 1/2 calf with tan & black marbled boards, textured leather spine in 4 compartments with gilt stamped raised bands, black title patch spine with gilt lettering, brown coated EPs, all edges trimmed and speckled in brown. rubbing edges & corners of covers, top of spine rubbed down about 2mm, pages very clean and bright, very minor foxing on blank side of frontispiece and two very faint foxing spots on title page otherwise pages are free of foxing and quite bright, no staining, solid binding, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages. 217mm tall x 135mm, pages: flyleaf + blank + blank + frontis + title + preface (numbered iv on verso) + 14 (some numbered in roman up to xvii with last of this group being erratum page) + 346 + 2 pages ads; illustrations: frontis engraving + 3 plates engravings; 6 appendices (including brief one by Michael Faraday on analysis of some water samples). Author describes 2 crossings (winter & summer) of the Andes in the vicinity of Aconcagua between Santiago, Chile & Mendoza, Argentina. Two of the plates show: 1) people climbing snow peak and 2) glissading in the mountains.
