Interior is clean and unmarked; one leaf has a chipped corner. Approximately twenty illustrations by Ezra Jack Keats. 180, [2] pages. 8 x 5.25 inches. Dust jacket chipped at tail of spine and at corners; a few small chips to the edges of the front and rear panel; not clipped ($2.75); in an archival mylar sleeve. A vividly written and illustrated story of the adventures of a Comanche boy named Little Hawk, set in the early days of the West, who desperately wants to capture a wild horse. A nice volume featuring the earlier work of children's book illustrator Ezra Jack Keats (1916-1983). Keats went on to win the 1963 Caldecott Medal. The author, Glenn Balch (1902-1989), was the author of several books for young adults about the West, stories of cowboys, Indians, horses and the outdoors. He had a great affection for animals and had a skill for writing about the relationship between humans and animals. He was born in Venus, Texas, but for most of his life called Idaho home.
