About This Item
London: Chatto & Windus., 1946. "The Living Novel" consists of thirty-two essays of which the first twenty-one are concerned with English novels - or more precisely, novels written in English - in historical perspective, beginning with Fielding and Richardson and ending with Walt Whitman and Stephen Crane. Of the remainder, one is devoted to the Italian Giovanni Verga, four to the French novelists and six to the Russians. In his introduction V.S. Prichett explains that the essays are not intended to form a body of literary criticism, nor yet a history of the novel. His approach is individual rather than scholastic, exploratory rather than dogmatic, and his aim is to discover, by analysing some of the great novels of the past, what a good novel ought to be. This book remains sound, bright and clean. While the price-intact dust jacket is still bright there is some edge paper loss. A most respectable copy.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Good.
