Printed title leaf, leaf listing plates, 48 lithograph plates. First edition. Baird's pattern book was the third such work published in America and one of most pivotal books in shaping American taste. It included a comprehensive ra of items from bureaus, desks, wardrobes, chairs, bookcases, tables, and beds. The style incorporated American colonial design with French and European tast and was heavily influenced by Desire Gulimard's French pattern books. The amalgam of tastes was largely created by Joseph Bonaparte (the elder brother Napoleon) constructing a magnificent house, Point Breeze, twenty-five miles north of Philadelphia. Fine in a Very Good Plus dust jacket, front flap top corner creased, small chips and wear at flap folds and spine tips, archival acid-free tape mend verso of front flap. Laid in is a 4 x 6 invitation card ( undated as to year, but most likely 1956 or '57) , SIGNED by Mies Van Der Rohe, Norman Schlossman, Charles F. Murphy, and Alfred Shaw, headed "The American Institute of Architects, The College of Fellows", which reads : "Under the Intellectual Patronage of the College of Fellow a group of our Fellows of The Institute from the Chicago area will meet informally on the seventh of December to have a renewal of friendship. We will talk about what we might do in the future for the profession, for ourselves and if necessary for the world in general. The Place will be the Graham Foundation, 4 West Burton Place. The time will be- Cocktails-6.P.M. Dinner 7 P.M. Coffee, Liqueurs- 8:15, R.S.V.P Norman Schlossman, 333 N. Michigan Avenue, Chicago". The 4 gentlemen who signed this card would headline a Who's Who of Chicago architecture, starting of course, with Mies Van Der Rohe, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern architecture, who lived and worked for 31 years in Chicago., and whose buildings there include the Chicago Federal Complex and the Farnsworth House. Charles F. Murphy's most historic creations were the Daley Center and the Prudential Building, Alfred Shaw, the Merchandise Mart and the Field Building, and Norman Schlossman designed the community of Park Forest and the shopping centers of Old Orchard, Oakbrook, and Hawthorne. Although no indication in this book, from the collection of William J. Bachman, Hammond, Indiana architect who was also a Fellow of the A.I.A. and in 1976 became Chancellor of F.A.I.A.
