About This Item

New York: Knopf, 2007. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. First edition stated. Fine in fine dust jacket. Hardcover. 279 pp. with index. Illustrations Pioneering study of Thomas Jefferson's relationships with women in his personal life and in American society and politics, based on fresh research in little-used sources. With a mother and six sisters, he learned early that in those days homemaking was the realm of women in the household; his discomfort around women brought a succession of embarrassments as he sought to control his emotions. We read of his early attempts at seductions and failed proposals, his marriage at age 27 to Martha Wayles Skelton with whom he was happy for a decade before her premature death from childbirth, his romantic attachments while in Paris, his friendship with Abigail Adams and others. The author also offers a fresh and cogent account of Jefferson's liason with Sally Hemings.
