Music For Three Or More Pianists A Historical Survey And Catalogue In the 19th century, music for multiple pianos was hugely popular. J.S. Bach initiated the tradition of keyboard music for three or more players around 1730. Mozart also contributed to this genre. Other important composers like Czerny, Moscheles, Smetana, Glazunov, and Rachmaninoff continued the tradition. Louis Moreau Gottschalk organized 'monster concerts' in the Americas, using numerous pianos and pianists. 20th Century Developments By the early 20th century, a wealth of transcriptions and arrangements had accumulated. Later, influential 20th-century composers such as Ives, Stravinsky, Antheil, Orff, Dallapiccola, and Milhaud composed original works for multiple pianos.
