New York: Pantheon, (1962). First U.S. edition / First printing. Red cloth. Fine in price-clipped jacket about fine. The author's first novel, and most famous work. This is a bright sparkling copy. The jacket is on a heavy stock with a thick varnish. Though price clipped, it is not to be confused with the lighter uncoated book club issue. Gunter Grass was the Winner of the 1999 Nobel Prize for Literature.

Includes a note on Indian Rights Association letterhead transmitting the book 'with the compliments of the association" signed L.E.L. Controversial book for its time describes mistreatment of Native Americans of the Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw and Seminole tribes after their forced relocation to Oklahoma after the Trail of Tears. Softcover, 35 pages. Light edgewear, number at top of front cover, a few very light vertical pencil lines in outer margins emphasizing certain paragraphs, no names or other markings.. First Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Very Good hardcover, no DJ. Pawson and Nicholson extra-gilt signed binding. Full dark brown hard grain morocco over boards; gilt stamped frames with Arabesque spandrels on front and rear covers; raised bands on spine with gilt stamped panels; all edges gilt with fore edge painting of a rural scene in color under the gilt; fine gilt stamped Arabesque work on turn-ins; nonpareil marbled end papers. Bright, clean covers and spine; spine title gilt chipped off - still legible; some rubbing at cover fore corners, boards just exposed at lower fore corners; tightly bound; 'bound by Pawson and Nicholson' in pale blue on front free end paper, which is separated and laid in; clean interior with slight general age darkening. List of plates indicates 88 but plate numbers go to 99 and not all plates are numbered. Various artists; engravings by Reveil and others. 12mo, unpaged.

Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1881. Decorated green cloth with marbled endpapers. An odd-shaped piece cut out of front free endpaper, hinges cracked, spine headers heavily rubbed, light general wear: VG/no dj. 12mo. Mason #310: 1st American edition, later impression(?) with top edges gilt instead of yellow and decorated endpapers. Binding decoration is sunflowers printed in black rather than cherub imbibing seen on some copies. Mason does not establish priority.

The first edition of Whitman published in the UK, the only time Whitman (reluctantly) allowed his writings and his portrait photograph to be censored.

Minor corner chips to half-title. Short closed fold tear to Plate I. Toned with some light offsetting of plates, foxing/browning to index.
This edition has an additional plate to the 1790 edition, plus additional material. The plates are each dated September 1, 1805. Significant to the library of the vine. A handsome volume.
