About This Item
Etched playing board with rules of the game in lower margin of the sheet and publisher's number 221. Sheet-size 407 x 335 mm. Very rare and beautifully illustrated etched sheet for dice game; the centre field of the playing board depicts an outdoor scene with a dressage show of monkeys in various costumes with spectators behind wooden bars, in the corners more or less anthropomorphic images of four species of monkeys. 14 of the 30 fields showing monkeys in various costumes doing acrobatic stunts, and if you enter one of these fields you have to according to the rules restart from the beginning or pay a penalty.
- Georg Nikolaus Renner (1803-1854) was an art dealer and publisher in Nuremberg since 1826. From 1837 Friedrich Schuster became his partner, from then on the company was called "Renner & Co" – therefore the present game must have been published before. An almost perfect copy of a finely illustrated example of a monkey theatre dice game, a subject which became very popular in the 19th century.
