Each volume with red morocco title label, decorated and lettered in gilt. Some rubbing and chipping to most volumes and a few hinges cracked but all still holding. Overall an attractive set of eighteenth century bindings. Previous owners bookplate on front paste downs.

William Dugdale was 17th-century English historian known for his works of antiquity of English aristocracy and monastics. While not his most notable work, 'Troubles in England'
is a treatise written to describe the wars that influenced Europe and England during the 17th-century. Dugdale correlates three wars – English Civil War, Barons' War, and the French Wars of Religion – and how they related to each other. Interestingly, the DNB notes that this work was "written throughout in a strain of animosity to all who took the anti-royalist side." However, this work isnotable for its accuracy.

With Smith's (d. 1921) bookplate and label on front inner wrapper. Smith was a Knight of Treliske, Cornwall. Light offsetting to title page from map, front wrappers somewhat soiled, light rubbing to spine but o/w near fine. Edwaard Osler [1798-1863] was called to Truro in Cornwall as editor of the 'Royal Cornwall Gazette.' Several special articles contributed by him to its columns, such as 'Packet Question: Falmouth or Southampton', were reissued in seperate form (Dictionary of National Biography). A complete set of what must have been one of the most impressive bibliographical publications of 19th Century France - indeed Europe. Copiously illustrated with facsimiles and colour reproductions, (many of which are fold-out and impressively large) of remarkable manuscripts and bindings throughout history. In contemporary 1/4 calf with raised bands and blue labels at one stage this set must have been particularly eye-catching but sadly time has taken its toll somewhat. In various states of condition ranging from Good/VG to Fair only. Most with substantial off-setting in places, many tissue-guards missing from the plates. Some occasional spotting and damp-staining to odd volumes but not terribly so. The bindings are overall in Fair condition with several split (and one entirely loose) backstrips and corners. Hardcover rebound in mid-20th century 3/4 leather with marbled paper-covered boards. Red leather label with gilt lettering on the front board. The red leather label is scuffed but still bright. The binding of the book shows light to moderate wear. Prior owner's 20th century bookplate on the front pastedown. New endpapers. The text is a bit toned, and the title page and terminal leaf show heavier toning. The text is generally clean. Scarce. Henry Beaufoy (1750-1795) was a British Member of Parliament and was the son of a Quaker merchant (although after marriage he conformed to the Church of England). In April, 1791 he voted for abolition of the slave trade but revised his position towards gradual abolition in 1792.

Packed with 100's of detailed mono line drawings, the work provides not only a catalogue of the Great Exhibition but its history. A very good copy in attractive early leather binding of full red morocco. Spine with raised bands, the compartments ruled, lettered and fully decorated in gilt. Elaborate decorative gilt panel within single gilt ruled and two blind ruled borders on both boards. Bevelled edges. Gilt inner dentelles. Coated yellow endpapers. All edges gilt. Bound by Lewis and Williams binders of Cardiff and with their small label to the inner rear board. Noted Irish author Joyce Cary's copy with his ex libris, and his son Michael's just below, on the front pastedown endpaper. Some minor rubbing to the edges but overall a very good copy.
