Pp. 82. Frontispiece is a fold-out map. Appendix includes brief descriptions and illustrations of models of the subject junks. Prefatory note by F. W. Maze, Inspector General of Customs. Glossary. A 1948 gift inscription on fffep; slight fading to spine; cover a bit rubbed; original price of $12.50 struck with pencil on front cover. Please see photos.

According to Worcester, "China holds scholarship in high honor, but apparently they did not concern themselves with naval history or nautical lore." Worcester stepped in to fill that void of works on traditional sailing craft: While working in anti-smuggling operations in the Marine Department, Worcester took an interest in traditional Chinese sailing design, which included architectural design in operation for some two-thousand years. Inspector General Maze, noticing GRGW's writing and drawing ability, placed him full time in the Chinese Nautical Research Department. For eight years he traveled through China, during the war of resistance against Japanese invaders. His ultimate aim: As with Joseph Needham, to restore pride and history of the Chinese people. At t his point Worcester is listed as Assistant River Inspector. Albeit a minor work in Worcester's masterful oeuvre, this an exceedingly scarce treatise.

Description:
1799 History of INDIA Asia MAPS Egypt Hindu Robertson Scottish Enlightenment

William Robertson was a notable 18th-century Scottish historian, and, according to Humphreys, 'made significant contributions to the writing of Scottish history and the history of Spain and Spanish America.' While Robertson was most known for his histories of America and Great Britain, he also published an historical account of India.

In this work, 'An Historical Disquisition Concerning the Knowledge of India', Robertson explored the commercial and cultural connections India had with the West through the end of the 15th-century. According to Stewart Brown, this work
"represents one of the more significant achievements of the late Scottish Enlightenment."
The DNB says of this work:
"the early and high civilization of India, and the wonderful progress of its inhabitants in elegant arts and useful science, may have some influence upon the behavior of Europeans towards that people"

This fine work features 2 enormous, folding… Read More

Description:
This book is bound with leather covers and a cloth spine. There is a label on the front cover which is not readable. New endsheets have been added at some point in the book's long history, but the original endsheets and covers are present. There is a former owner's inscription on the original front endsheet. Pages are intact and the binding is tight. The book contains black & white drawings of muscles, bones, and bandages. There is an index for medicines and an extensive table of contents of body parts, diseases, syndromes, and treatments. Printed in the year 1846, the book itself is, in essence, a time capsule that portrays how medicine was practiced aboard an early nineteenth century sailing ship. This will make a wonderful addition to the library of the collector of medical memorabilia.
