The plates are beautfully colored and fresh. The text leaves and plates were originally glued into paper wrappers, which were then glued into the portfolios; the glue has disintegrated and the sheets are now loose in the portfolios. Langendijk, Dirk (Rotterdam 1748-1805). Original drawing - Battle scene of cavalry and infantry, a church in the background. Oblong 8vo. ca. 19 x 15 cm. Very fine, original pen and wash drawing, in greys with some use of colour, signed and dated 1802.
Lively battle scene, the cavalry heavily attacking, one cavalrist blowing a trumpet, and another carrying the flag, with broken canon wheels and dead soldiers, a horse lying in the foreground, and in the middle, lighted by the fire of the infantry, cavalry and other troops attacking from all sides, amidst large clouds and a church seen far away in the background. Dirk Langendijk (1748-1805), was born in Rotterdam and is especially known for his fine drawings of battle scenes. He and his equally famous artist son Jan Anthonie Langendijk (1780-1818), often drew from nature. Both are regarded as the most important Dutch painters of military scenes documenting the French revolutionary and the Napoleonic wars in the Low Countries. His drawings were already collected during his life-time.

A portfolio of FORTY-EIGHT plates, TWO plates MISSING (should be a total of fifty plates), in a blue cloth-covered flower-box with a slipcase that has a blue leather spine. There was probably a booklet with text, which is missing. The plates are 11" x 14" and all in vg+ or better, with French captions. They depict French soldiers in uniform from about 1790 to 1870. The flower-box is vg- (leather pull-tab broken off; cloth wrinkled and puckered). The slipcase is vg- (soiled, rubbed, edgeworn; white marks on one panel; but the leather spine looks nice).
