FIRST EDITION, 1807, French text, 24 fine plates, printed in colours and finished by hand, after the Pretres, pages: viii, 384; LA CORBEILLE DE FLEURS: FIRST EDITION 1807 with coloured plates after Pretre, French text, 8vo, approximately 205 x 115 mm, 8 x 4¾ inches, 12 folding leaves of engraved music, 24 fine plates printed in colours and finished by hand, after drawings by J.G. PRETRE and his daughter Mlle Josephine Pretre, pages: viii, 384. Bound in contemporary mottled sheep, narrow gilt floral border to covers, gilt decoration to spine, 2 gilt lettered red morocco labels, edges and endpapers marbled. A few hair-line surface cracks to spine, small bump to upper corner of lower cover, small oval ink stamp removed from blank area of first title page, now neatly patched, a total of 8 further ink stamps of E. Tessier throughout the 2 works, not affecting text or images, mostly to lower blank margins, large blank piece torn off lower corner of page 77/78 (first work) now neatly repaired, no loss to text, pale brown stain to lower margin of pages 267-270 (first work), lower blank margin torn off final page of second work now neatly repaired, no loss to text, very good clean copies. This is the Plesch copy with the gilt red leather bookplate of the collection of Arpad Plesch on the front pastedown. With 2 decorative frontispieces, 1 decorative title, and 106 hand coloured plates. The title pages are undated but Vol I has a preface dated 1820 and the 1st edition was produced between 1816 and 1820. This copy is in new half calf with gilt lines title labels and volume numbers to spines. The marbled paper matches the marbling on the page edges. New endpapers. All the plates are in very good clean condition and are well coloured. The paper quality varies with the paper in the first half of Vol II being noticeably toned and prone to light spotting. Three volumes, small quarto, pp viii, 96, (6); iv, 188; iv, 188, three vignette title pages, an extra hand-coloured title page in the first volume, with 137 fine hand coloured plates, all edges gilt, bound in a Victorian half morocco and cloth, the spines highly decorated in gilt, a little rubbed at the joints and corners, the cloth sides slightly marked and very slightly bubbled in a few small places. In Volume 3 title page and the first two plates and text are a little stained at the upper corner, the subsequent three plates and text pages very faintly marked; otherwise this is a remarkably clean and bright set internally - the plates all have their protective tissues which very occasionally have a faint spot of foxing, but nothing has transfered to the surface of the plate. Octavo, pp xii, 310, illustrated (including two chromolithographs by Keulemans), a rather poor copy, lacking the folding map, an ex-Boots library copy in red library cloth, a bit used and weak internally with cracked hinges (through front and rear hinges tight and strong), some plates a little frayed, a small stamp on the front endpaper and a library label on the rear, the cloth rather worn, marked on the upper cover, the spine torn. A useful working copy. [Andre was an explorer and collector of natural history specimens . He wrote a glossary of common and scientific names of plants and animals and put together a collection of 1800 bird skins which are held at Tring. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a Fellow of the Zoological Society. Vienna: Schrämblischen, 1817. Image is 8 1/8 inches by 6 1/4 inches on a sheet that is 9 1/16 inches by 7 1/8 inches. Drawn and engraved by pharmacist turned naturalist Ferdinand Vietz ((1772-1815) and published in volume 7 of Icones Plantarum Medico-Oeconomico-Technologicarum, edited by J. L. Kerndl and published by Schrämblischen in Vienna in 1818. Original hand-coloring. Like all the plates from Vietz's classic work on medicinal uses of plants, this is a lovely original print on high-quality watermarked laid paper. Condition is very good: clean and bright.
