About This Item

New York: W. W. Norton, 1980. 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. 8.5x5.7x1.3in. dust jacket clipped at bottom of front flap. Dust jacket in clear protector.
This book is an outgrowth of a conference held at the Winterthur Museum in November 1977. It reflects the museum's effort to bring about a greater awareness of folk art--not to try to convince anyone that earthenware pots are more important than porcelain bowls but to show that a more comprehensive and balanced examination of objects is necessary to redress the neglect which resulted from previously dominant elitist values. The essays and contributors are: "Uncommon Art of the Common People" by Beatrix T. Rumford, "Expanding Frontiers: The Michigan Folk Art Project" by Marsha MacDowell and C. Kurt Dewhurst, "The Material Culture and Folk Arts of the Norwegians in America" by Marion J. Nelson, "Baptismal Certificate and Grave marker" by Frederick S. Weiser, "Fachwerk and Brettstuhl: The Rejection of Traditional Folk Culture" by Lonn W. Taylor, "Arrival and Survival: The Maintenance of the Afro-American Tradition in Folk Art and Craft" by John Michael Vlach, "Beating a Live Horse: Yet Another Note on Definitions and Defining" by Roger L. Welsch, "The Arts: Fine and Plain" by George A. Kubler, "Folk Art from an Anthropological Perspective" by Johannes Fabian and Ilona Szombati-Fabian, "Folk Art: The Challenge and the Promise" by Kenneth L. Ames, "L.A. Add-ons and Re-dos: Renovation in Folk Art and Architectural Design" by Michael Owen Jones. With 134 illustrations.
