Dibner 20; PMM 97; Sparrow 34; Norman 432; Pritzel 1640; Adams C-20; BM/STC Italian p. 134; Cleveland Collections 122, Holden Arboretum Copy 2 (this copy). - THE VERY RARE FIRST EDITION OF "THE FIRST TRUE TEXTBOOK OF BOTANY" (DSB). The first book of this text is of outstanding historical importance. Here, in thirty pages of admirably clear Latin, Cesalpino presented the principles of botany, grouping a wealth of careful observations under broad categories, on the model of Aristotle and Theophrastus. "Caesalpinus's philosophy is Aristotelian: plants have a vegetable soul which is responsible for nutrition and for the reproduction of organisms. Nutrition was believed to come from the roots in the soil and to be carried up the stems to produce the fruit. Hence, the roots, stems and fruit are the main characteristics selected by Caesalpinus as the basis for his classification" (PMM).

Cesalpino was the first to elaborate a system of the plants based on a unified and coherent group of notions. By paying little attention to the medicinal uses of plants he raised botany to the level of an independent science. Our copy is an interesting example for an early re-used binding, recased in the 17th or 18th century, upside-down with the hand lettering of the former work still present at foot of the spine.

Description:
London : Printed by J Davis [Vols I & II] and B Wilks [Vol III] for the Author, 1798 A very good copy of the complete 3 volume 1st edition including later Supplement, with 440 hand coloured plates on 436 leaves. This work was James Sowerby's follow up to his successful English Botany and he both drew, and engraved the plates and oversaw the colouring. He immersed himself in the study of mushrooms over the period of work, which was published between 1798 and 1809, including creating 200 models of larger species, and making his collection of specimens available to public view. In his introduction to the Supplement (which was issued without separate title) he states his concern that the identification of many individual species, with illustrations that focus only on perfect specimens, might confuse the public into eating poisonous fungi. His response was to illustrate a number of specimens rather than the 'perfect one' and to model a number of poisonous species for public inspection. This… Read More

Manchester: R. & W. Dean, 1799. First edition. Two parts in one volume, octavo, pp viii, 1-227, (i), second title page, 229-449, (i), slight age-toning and the very odd fox-mark, but really very clean internally, contemporary tree calf, slightly worn at the corners, re-backed with a new calf spine, the original label preserved. A rare work, and especially so with its second title page preserved; this was frequently discarded because of the continuous pagination. [Soulsby - add. 772. Blanche Henry 861 - "Hull took up botany as a relaxation from medical duties". She also comments that of the other edition, the second of 1808, only the first part exists.]. [John Hull, M.D., was born at Poulton in Lancashire in 1764, and received his medical education at Leyden, where he graduated doctor of medicine 18th May, 1792. He settled at Manchester, and devoted himself especially to the practice of midwifery, and held the appointment of physician to the Lying-in Hospital there. He was admitted an… Read More

Description:
Edinburgh and London: Maclachlan & Stewart; Bladwin, Cradock & Joy, 1823 A very good copy in 6 volumes dating from 1823-1828, with 360 hand coloured plates. Robert Kaye Greville, 1794-1866, had medical training but an assured income allowed him to choose a more diverse life in science and art, and in his public work - where he became a leading voice against slavery. He published his Scottish Cryptogamic Flora in monthly parts, intending it to complete the catalogue of flora in Smith and Sowerby's English Botany. He drew all the specimens himself and these drawings together with the detailed text, form a comprehensive picture of the scottish cryptogamic flora as it was in the early nineteenth century. This copy is in contemporary marbled boards with cloth spines that have been rebacked and had new title labels. The binding is possibly a publisher's one. The boards have general wear but the bindings are sound. New endpapers have been added. Each volume has a half title and title page,… Read More

Description:
Florence: Giorgio Marescotti, 1583. First edition. the first true textbook of botany (PMM 97). First edition, and an exceptionally fine copy, of "the first true textbook of botany' (DSB): the introduction of Cesalpino's classification system, which anticipated Linnaeus' system of binomial nomenclature. "Whereas other sixteenth-century botanists were content simply to compile vast haphazard catalogues of plants, Cesalpino was the first to devise a rational classification system based upon plant morphology, the principles of which he set forth in the first book of De plantis" (Norman). "With Andreas Caesalpinus a new era begins ... His book 'On Plants' was the first attempt to classify plants in a systematic manner based on a comparative study of forms ... The traditional division into trees, shrubs, half-shrubs and herbs is retained, but they are now subdivided into different categories according to their seed, fruit and flower. The first section contains the general system, while the other fifteen… Read More
