Quarto contemporary panelled calf (rebacked & blind-tooled with black spine label/tips worn) 336pp +(vi)index The Ae of Aquaticae & Noxae are very faintly printed on the Titlepage and there is slight paper thinning to the paper in 4 small (1cm diameter) round areas and part of 2 letters have been strengthened with ink. Wepfer was the first to analyze the pharmacological effect of hemlock and its poison. In this treatise 1679 the author also reports the discovery of the duodenal glands.

Folio leather-spined embossed cloth gilt on bevelled boards (rebacked tips slightly worn spine gilt darkened & dulled) All Edges Gilt. Unique gilt and illuminated chromoliths inserted into sunken card mounts back to back. Double pages except for the final plate which is printed on the front (recto) only. Slight foxing to mounts but clean and lovely. *A lavish production in high Victorian style with central texts with large illuminated first capital letter and other ornaments surrounded by decorative frame. A wide shaped border incorporating a pictorial miniature then decorates the page with floral emblems of vines and trellises in a stunning background of colors. *Based on the idea of a mediaeval illuminated page displaying the virtuosity of Victorian chromo-lithography as beautifully executed by Day & Son. Quite difficult to find, this is a stunning early gift book.

This is example #49/100 copies on Van Gelder paper. Ten beautiful etched plates. Each numbered and signed by Mayeur. Softback, with cream covers. Glassine cover which is somewhat darkened. There is a small nick to glassine only to the spine. Small label to spine with copy number written. Also included is a card from Mayeur, with a handwritten note on it wishing the recipient best Christmas wishes for 1931. The plates are in perfect condition. Loose in gathers as issued. Held in what appears to be the original slipcase. In very good condition, blue cloth and marbles sides, with just a little rubbing. 395 x 395 mm (15½ x 15½ inches). Long note in small hand to first blank detailing the purchase of the volume in 1840 and some notes on the poet : trimmed at the head of the leaves : corners slightly rounded and gilt worn in patches but mostly bright. Thomas Randolph (1605-1635) was a poet, playwright and wit of great promise who was expected by many to become poet laureate after his mentor Ben Johnson.
