About This Item

Boston: Little, Brown, & Co., 1856-1857. [vols. I-II, 1857; vols. III-IV, 1856.] Four volumes, issued as part of the series, "The British Poets," and with the spine titles thus, but complete in and of themselves. 16mo. lvi, 320, iv, 344, 283, [1], and v, 280 pages, plus frontispiece portrait in vol. I. 4-page ads in vol. I before front free endpaper. Original dark brown cloth stamped in gilt and blind. [17.4 cm]. Chips and wear to spine ends; corners bumped and a little worn. Name on front pastedowns. Frontispiece and first title page foxed, and some scattered foxing elsewhere; last forty or so pages in vol. I with corner creases. Good plus. Reprints. A made-up set using different printings, but one apparently assembled many years ago with the same early owner's name and notations on the endpapers. The bindings are of uniform design, with a trifling difference in the shade of the cloth on the third and fourth volumes. Thomas (1799-1845) was a poet known for his humorous verses and for his later topical poems, including “The Song of the Shirt,” "The Workhouse Clock," “The Lay of the Labourer," and “The Bridge of Sighs.”
