New York: Exposition Press, [1952]. 80 pages. Original blue cloth with green lettering. [22 cm.] Near fine in very good plus dust jacket. A hint of sun to top edges of covers, endpapers slightly foxed. Jacket is slightly sunned on the spine panel and shows tiny chips at the spine ends and one corner. FIRST EDITION. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, on the front free paper, with a generic inscription ("With many good wishes.") The first and only collection of the author's poems. Her only other publication was a collection of stories, "At Christmas Time the World Grows Young" (1939). A native of West Point, Nebraska, Almy was a longtime resident of Lincoln, where she was active in numerous literary and civic organizations.

New Haven: Yale University Press, [printed at the Earl Trumbull Williams Memorial], 1923. [10] pages. Original blue boards with silver cover lettering. [23.9 cm.] Very good plus in very good dust jacket. Tanning to free endpapers, rear hinge started, but sound, otherwise a nice copy. Jacket has small tape-repaired tear at head of front panel and several tiny chips. FIRST SEPARATE EDITION. A poem set during the First World War. Allen fought in the Aisne-Marne campaign of 1918. The poem was originally printed in the North American review in 1919 and also appeared in the author's second book, "Wampum and Old Gold" (1921). As is discussed on the rear panel of the dust jacket, "The Blindman" was commemorated by the Poetry Society of South Carolina with an annual prize of the same name.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1919. 187 pages. Original green cloth stamped in gold. [19.4 cm.] Very good plus, lacking dust jacket. Spine ends a trifle rubbed; spine lettering a little flaked, but legible; else a nice copy. FIRST EDITION.

London: George Routledge & Co., 1858. Small 4to. xv, [1], 391 pages, plus frontispiece. Illustrated with numerous engravings by the Brothers Dalziel after works by J. Everett Millais, Birket Foster, John Tenniel, and many others (some full-page, but all reckoned in pagination). Original full brown morocco, extensively decorated in blind, with gilt spine lettering. All edges gilt and tooled in a crisscross pattern. Evidently a publisher's deluxe binding. [23 cm.] An attractive ex-library copy with no external markings and only light internal markings. Tasteful bookplate of Sondley Reference Library on front pastedown, embossed stamp of the institution on first few leaves and several others; small number stamp on verso of title and in lower margin of one leaf. Otherwise very good. Light rubbing and a few tiny stains to leather. Light to moderate scattered foxing, a bit heavier on frontispiece and title. Binding is solid and tight. FIRST EDITION.

Los Angeles: Savage and Savage, [1951]. 64 pages. Original black cloth stamped in silver. [22.2 cm.] Good plus in very good dust jacket. Light edge wear to boards. Top edge soiled, a little soiling to endpapers, tape mark on front free endpaper, but text is clean. Jacket is slightly wrinkled and bumped at the head of the spine panel, and shows some sun. FIRST EDITION of the author's first book. No. 39 of 999 copies numbered and signed by the author. PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION BY THE AUTHOR (unsigned), on the dedication page. Also present are a TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, an AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, and an AUTOGRAPH POEM (unsigned), all laid-in. Each cover has a morocco grained panel enclosed in multiple blind rules, an ornate gilt border, and double gilt rules. Spine with raised bands, new spine labels in red and black leather, and gilt decorations on other compartments. Marbled endpapers and all edges marbled. About very good. Lightly rubbed, some sunning evident on upper third of boards, and faint reminder of small removed label on front board, but binding is still attractive. Original brown cloth with gilt spine lettering; covers ruled and decorated in blind; brown coated endpapers. [18.5 cm.] Spine worn at ends and in vertical line along center, with loss of most of the "T" in "The." Corners bumped and a little worn. Name on front pastedown. Foxing to frontispiece; slight offsetting and foxing to title; a few minor traces of foxing scattered in the text. Good plus. FIRST EDITION. BAL 17291 (binding "A").

Cincinnati: Moore, Wilstach & Baldwin, 1866. 159 pages. Original cloth. [19.3 cm.] Ex-Sondley Reference Library with internal markings only. Tasteful bookplate on front pastedown, embossed stamp on title and one other leaf, and number stamp on verso of title and in margin of one other page. Else good only. Cloth mostly faded from original purple to tan, with some wear and spotting; shallow chips to spine ends; one centimeter split to front hinge; light scattered foxing. FIRST EDITION. Scarce. Cornelius Neff was an officer in Co. H, 54th Ohio Infantry, who rose to the rank of captain by the end of the war. He fought with Sherman's army until Dec. 13, 1864, when he was severely wounded in the leg during the attack on Fort McAllister. He returned to service two months later, landing at Hilton Head on Feb. 20. He traveled to Charleston, where he visited Fort Sumter, and was stationed at the nearby encampment at St. Andrew's Depot. Edward Young (1683-1675) is best known for his long poem, "Night Thoughts," which makes up nearly the whole of vol. I. This volume also includes "The Life of Edward Young," by Rev. J. Mitford.
