Description:
Tokyo: Kairyu-Do Press, 1929. [4], 152, [1] pages. Original boards with coated dark blue paper on spine and patterned gray paper on covers; gilt spine lettering and blue cover lettering. 19 x 13 cm. A very good copy in poor dust jacket. Spine ends a little rubbed, faint stains to covers. The jacket is chipped with the loss of most of the spine panel, a penny size portion of the front panel, and the top 2 cm of the rear panel. The header on the rear panel is affected, however, the publisher's priced list of books is intact. The extant portion of the spine panel is repaired on the verso. Apparent FIRST OF THIS EDITION. An early publication of the Kairyu-Do Press (sometimes styled Kairyudo), which began operating circa 1924. Previous offerings of the press included Stevenson's Kidnapped in both English and Japanese; works by Hawthorne, Hardy, and Irving; and several titles by Lafcadio Hearn. The editor, Kentaro Omiya, was a professor at Nihon University who studied comparative languages. This… Read More

Description:
Dublin: William Curry, Jun. and Company, [n.d., circa late 1840s or 1850s]. x, [2] pages; pp. [5]-396, plus engraved frontispiece portrait of the author and 26 full-page engraved plates by Phiz. Several woodcuts in the text. Later 19th century half blue calf over marbled boards with raised bands, handsomely gilt spine in six compartments, red leather spine label, marbled endpapers, and all edges marbled. Corners are slightly bumped and leather shows minor rubbing at extremities. Light, mostly marginal foxing to frontispiece; lacking the tissue guard; offsetting from the frontispiece to the title-page. Book is over opened between frontispiece and title, but binding is sound. Many plates with light to moderate foxing, with occasional dark spots. A half dozen leaves with scattered old stains, not affecting legibility (a bit of split tea, were we to guess). Many corners with light reader's creases. Text block is thus good only, however the binding is attractive and better than very good. Later printing.

New York: Henry Holt and Co., 1912. iii, 377 pages, plus [6] pages publisher's ads. Original green cloth lettered and decorated in orange. 19.5 x 13 cm. Minuscule nick to the head of the spine and a bit of dust soiling to the top edge, still a bright, near fine copy. The scarce dust jacket is present but missing a large portion (approximately half) of the rear panel. The jacket also shows tiny chips and sun-fading to the spine panel, a short tear and creasing to the head of the front panel, and some light soiling. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, following the English original of the same year (with the title, “John of Jingalo“.) A Ruritanian satire of modern British politics. The book contains "running commentary on Utopian social solutions, particularly with regard to women's rights. Housman was actively involved in early twentieth-century feminist campaigns, including women's suffrage" (John Clute, in “Encyclopedia of Science Fiction). “Bleiler, “Checklist of… Read More

Description:
Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1884. 4to. [8], 40 pages, including half-title, plus color frontispiece portrait and six full-page engraved plates. Original olive-green cloth over beveled boards, stamped in gilt and black; top edge gilt; yellow-coated endpapers. [28.7 cm.] Very good. Light soiling to covers; very light foxing to prelims and final plate (bound after the last page of text); still a respectable copy. FIRST OF THIS ILLUSTRATED EDITION. Copies in the original cloth are a bit scarce; the work is more often found in printed paper-covered boards. The text was originally printed as an article in the "North British Review" (Nov. 1863), and several separate editions followed. The frontispiece portrait is a reproduction of a watercolor, presumed to be the work of Miss Isabella Keith, who was Marjorie's adored, teenage cousin. The other six plates reproduce pencil sketches by Warwick Brookes (1808-1882) of Manchester, who drew them for the author. Marjorie (or Marjory) Fleming… Read More
