London: John Lane The Bodley Head Ltd., 1934. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR at front end page - "Cordially inscribed for a fellow craftsman in the Hard Art of Letters - Arch. J. Wightman - by John Cowper Powys Feb. 1935". Association Copy, Archibald John Wightman (1884-1971) was a legendary British lepidopterist. Frontispiece from a drawing of the author by Ivan Opffer. Very Good, no jacket, 1/8" tear to cloth at head of spine, slight corner bumps, light soiling to cloth. Powys' "Autobiography", covering his first 60 years, is considered one of his most important works. In the Introduction to the London, Macdonald, 1967 edition of the book, J. B. Priestley said that even if Powys had not written a single novel "this one book alone would have proved him to be a writer of genius." [ p. xi). "Although Thomas, Langridge and the New CBEL all assign priority to this American edition published by Simon and Schuster, Thomas himself giver the publication for the 'First English' edition published by the Bodley Head as October 2, 1934 - mover a month earlier than the date he gives for the American edition, November 8." (The Powys Family & Their Circle, Bertram Rota, Catalogue 244, 1987, #83). A lovely Presentation inscription. . SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. First Edition. Cloth. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness.
