Puss in Boots; and The Marquis of Carabas by Otto Speckter (Illustrator) - 1844

London: Hookham New Bond Street , 1787. fFull leather.. Very Good. C.R.Ryley. 12 volumes bound in six. Each book starts with a copper engraving by C.R.Ryley, engraved by Skelton. Complete. Bound in period full leather with red labels, with plain end papers. Inscribed in ink by ‘Henry Monkton’. In excellent condition. Berquin (1747-1791) specialized in writing childhood literature, this was unusual in this period. His children's books enjoyed great popularity and were often reprinted throughout the nineteenth century in many languages. Percy Muir lists the first English translation ‘L’Ami des Enfants…’ (1782-3) being published in 1786 in 24 volumes. This was printed a year later. The British Library does have a later copy of this edition. Provenance : Property from the estate of the late Lady King of Wartnaby.

Decorative printed card wraps and 16pp. Illustrated with 6 hand coloured full page copper engravings after Mulready, printed on one side only, as issued. Rear cover advertises 6 other Harris publications. Cover very worn; some light foxing throughout; most corners have old folds; cover and frontis are missing a small lower corner and most pages have overall light folds/creasing through handling. A good copy only.Original Wraps. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Mulready.. 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall.

Illustrated with twenty-six hand coloured wood engravings illustrations by Robert Cruikshank, with text by McDonald. Text and illustrations printed within ruled borders with corner ornaments. Bound in original yellow card boards. These have darkened. Some light foxing and finger marks, otherwise a very nice copy. Vary Scarce . Circa 1840. COPAC only list one copy in the Victoria and Albert Museum with yellow paper wrappers, description matches this copy.  

London: Darton and Harvey,, 1797. Hardcover. Very Good. 16mo. 120pp. Illustrated withthirty wood engraved portraits, full length, of monarchs in the text. Bound in original Dutch patterend boards, shaken and defective to the spine, but a clean complete copy. This was the last of the 18th Century editions of this popular illustrated history book for children first issued under this title by Newbery in 1759, subsequent editins brought up to date, this one down to 1794 only. Scarce.

London: Leipzig Friedrich Volckmar; London William Tegg & Co and A. & S. Joseph Myers & Co. Hardcover. Good. Heinrich Hoffman, strewelpeter, Struwwelpeter, hand coloured wood engravings.. Small 4to, (265 x 200 mm, 10½ x 8 inches) Not dated. 28pp. Translated from the German by Planche. Illustrated with a hand coloured wood engraved illustration on title page and twenty six large hand coloured wood engraved illustrations printed 1 side only. Missing the ‘Introduction’, page 2. It has been professionally rebound in cloth retaining the original orange printed wrappers, which have been laid onto the front and back boards. It has a blind stamp on the title page. New endpapers, title page has a small repaired tear; missing the ‘Introduction’ page; p.28, last page has a repair to the lower and upper missing right corners and some repaired tears.
