Second printing, one year after the first, of Father Burtchaell's collection of essays on abortion. Burtchaell was a theologian and provost at Notre Dame University and had originally wanted "nothing to do with the abortion quarrel." Burtchaell was spurred into action by a series of events, including a 1976 op-ed in Newsweek by John D. Rockefeller III attacking the Catholic Church for its opposition to abortion. Stung by Rockefeller's criticisms, Burtchaell began writing on the Church's teachings on life, culminating with these five essays: Essay I. Rachel Weeping: The Veterans of Abortion, Essay II.
