Washington, DC: Adjutant General's Office, War Department, 1864. Handbill. 12mo. Near fine. Two small file holes at left margin, not affecting text. This handsome General Order, titled "Exchange of Prisoners of War," announces that "The following prisoners of war, received and delivered at Rough and Ready, Georgia, the 19th, 22d, 28th, and 30th days of September, 1864, in pursuance of an agreement between Major General W.T. SHERMAN, U.S. Army, and General Hood, are declared duly exchanged...." -- followed by large numbers of Union commissioned officers, non-commissioned officers and privates (totaling 1128 soldiers) and Confederate commissioned officers, non-commissioned officers and privates (totaling 1332 soldiers). Signed at the conclusion in type by Assistant Adjutant General E.D. Townsend. Accompanied by a nice Civil War-era 5¼" X 8½" heavy stock steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portrait of Sherman. Near fine.

Hardbacks bound in blue cloth-covered boards with, gilt titles and black decorations; AEG (all edges gilt). Books have light edge wear with minor bumps at corners; formers owner's name and bookplates inside front cover; spine is sun darkened. Volume II has a small stain on the gilt edges. General Sherman's life and his memories of the Civil War. In a pocket, inside the back cover of Volume II, is the 30 x 46 inch map showing Sherman's Campaigns in the War. Pocket has a short tear and the map has tear in some of the creases. Volume I has 405 pages plus an ad for General Joseph's Narrative on Military Operations.
