Very good original brown cloth with an oriental red design across the front. Some soiled and edgewear, with a dull gilt title on the spine. Inside, remarkably this copy has never been read. Some pages were uncut at the top or foreedge, and I have just cut them all. Very clean and tight, no foxing or stains. No prior owner marks. Pages (x including the half title), 365. Most entrepid travellers of this age profess to be enthralled or romantic in prose about their courage and what they have done. Not Mr. de Windt. Much on Siberia and Mongolia. Protected in a clear, mylar dustjacket. As with the first edition, only 750 copies were produced for this second edition. Thus, rather scarce..

Includes the "Cigarette Race". "Life on board a P&O steamer is one continual round of pictures kaleidoscopic in its quick change and variety of colour".

Jan N. Brink adjutant of the Ladybrand commando under Crowther when Prinsloo surrendered to General Hunter. The prisoners of war were shipped to Ceylon where Brink had the opportunity to freely travel and explore the island. Written in English, this is a comprehensive contemporary study of Ceylon.

Brown cloth cover worn with rubbing, notably near corners near spine, corner bumps and some light splotches. Spine ends frayed. Name, date and minor notes to front blank pages. Blue endpapers unmarked, with some wrinkling at a crack/split at hinge of front endpapers. Text unmarked and pages intact with some edge wear and aging. Gilt title and decorations intact on cover and spine. Plum Adirondack Bibliography number 7244. Please see image. 176 pages. Note that this edition has 176 pages, fewer than the later 1882 and other Houghton, Mifflin editions, which added two chapters and which have 226 pages. (All Houghton - whether Houghton Osgood or Houghton Mifflin - editions were issued in varying cover colors - red, green, brown - but all with the same blind stamped design. The 1878 1st editons I have seen have the additional gilt design along the top and lower front edges, as seen here.)

With a critical analysis by Franz H. Mautner. Bound in red cloth with lettering stamped in black and yellow on spine. Price-clipped dust jacket with a dime-size chip to front panel and slight edge-wear. Else Fine. This edition, in hardcover with jacket, is somewhat scarce. Dust jacket now protected in a clear, removable archival sleeve.

Hardcover. Good. Gustave Dore engraved illustrations, AEG, copy with bright gilt decorations and title on front cover and spine. All pages edged in gilt. Repaired damage to 50% spine along gutter visible but tight, small cloth removal at top of spine and repaired inner gutters that are less than attractive but this accounts for lowered price else G+ or better, 523pps. Rest of book is impeccable the obvious flaws do exist and account for the price reduction. Beautifully illustrated with lithographs throughout book. Sold with all faults!
