About This Item

Paris: Louis Conard, 1921. Paperback. Very Good Indeed. 8.5" by 6". None. A nice copy of Flaubert's historical novel 'Salammbo', in a custom-made illustrated slipcase. In the original glassline wrap, with a custom-made illustrated slipcase With a map of the Carthage area loosely inserted. 'Salammbo' is a historical novel, set in Carthage during the third century BC. It takes place during the Mercenary Revolt, which was an uprising of mercenary armies revolting against Carthaginian control. This novel was quite a change for Gustave Flaubert, who is best known for his realistic and contemporary 'Madame Bovary'. however the novel was still a bestseller. Flaubert was one of the most popular French writers of his time. He is well known for his realism novels, showing the poverty and prosperity in France at that time. The short story writer Guy de Maupassant was a protege of Flaubert, and he also influenced writers Alphonse Daudet and Emile Zola. The slipcase is in a near fine condition. In the original publishers paper wrappers, with the original glassine wrap, and custom-made slipcase. Externally, smart. Head of the front joint is lifting a little but remains secure. Some light spots and a little age-toning to the wraps. Light edgewear to the extremities. Some spots to the fore edge. Spine is a little cracked from having been read but remains firm. Glassine wrap is age-toned, with some chips to the joints and to the extremities. Slipcase is very light marked, with a little bumping to the extremities. Internally, generally firmly bound, though pages 497 to 506 are loosening a little. Pages are bright with the odd scattered spot. Price stamp to the rear pastedown, 'prix 40 fr'. Very Good Indeed
