Schauer, Amy. The Schauer Australian Cookery Book. (14th Imp) W R Smith & Paterson: Brisbane, Australia 1975. 8vo (190x125mm) HC pict bds xi,[1],836pp. VG/- bds lightly rubbed

Schauer, Miss Amy (1871 - 1956)

The Schauer Australian Cookery Book

Brisbane: W R Smith & Paterson, 1975. Fourteenth Impression [Edition].

Octavo (190x125mm) pictorial cloth boards xi,[1],836pp.

The boards are faintly rubbed; some faint shelf wear; else near fine.  Although described on the title page as the "Fourteenth Impression", OCLC correctly records this as the Fourteenth Edition.

Miss Amy Schauer (pronounced 'shower') grew up in Sydney and trained at the Sydney Technical College under Mrs Wicken.  After graduation she moved to Queensland and taught cookery at the Central Technical College, Brisbane from 1895 until she retired in 1937.

In 1909 her book Theory of Cookery (co-written with her sister) became a prescribed text for domestic education in Queensland; it was subesquently republished as "The Schauer Australian Cookery Book".  Regularly updated by Schauer, even in retirement, (for example there is a chapter on pressure cookers in this edition) her book was a staple reference in domestic education and household kitchens throughout Queensland until the 1970s and is still a highly sought after 'standard' cookery book that is tightly held.  Early editions are particularly scarce.  Despite its long time in print, decent copies of even later editions, are not often available.

An almost near fine copy of an Australian classic providing an insight into cookery and diet in Queensland and rural northern Australia before the 1960s.

§ cf Hoyle 1214-1221 (earlier editions pre-1950); Axford p.359 (earlier edition).
§ OCLC records 6 holdings of this edition (all in Australia).

Description:
[London]: Andre Deutsch, 1953. Octavo (22 x 14.5 cm.), 186, [1] pages. Illustrated. Glossary. FIRST EDITION. Elizabeth Craig (1883-1980) was the author of several dozen cookbooks, the earliest in the 1920s and the last in 1980, and thus reflect a wide range of situations in England's food culture. Apparently sourced from Queen Victoria's own household scrapbook, the recipes here have been chosen by Craig. "Although this book is primarily a cookery book, it can also be read as a footnote to Court history. Few people will have the courage to follow Queen Victoria's advice and treat a sore throat with a gargle made of cayenne pepper; many, on the other hand, will be glad of such practical recipes as 'King George V's mutton cutlets.' The Court has influenced the country's cooking throughout the centuries. Here is a chance for you to experience this influence in your own home" (from the dust jacket). A bit of offsetting from the jacket flaps to the front endpapers. In publisher's unclipped dust jacket… Read More
