London: Cassell and Company, Ltd. First edition set in unclipped dust jackets that are bright and slightly faded on the traditionally fade-prone spines. The black cloth is clean and the bindings are tight. Faded red topstains. Contents are fine and unfoxed.

The coarse cloth bindings of this edition proved susceptible to soiling and mildew, the contents (printed on post-war "Economy Standards" paper) proved highly prone to spotting, the red-stained top edges are most often severely faded, and the dust jackets proved exceptionally vulnerable to pronounced spine toning.

Hardcover original black cloth stamped in gilt; patterned endpapers. 6 volumes: Vol 1 printed 1948 640 pages, Vol 2 printed 1949 684 pages, Vol 3 printed 1950 818 pages, Vol 4 printed 1951 917 pages, Vol 5 printed 1952 673 pages, Vol 6 printed 1954 716 pages. Condition Very Good Dust Jacket Very Good. First English edition 1948 - 1954. Beautiful clean, tight, square set with no marks or highlights. Slight shelf wear with minor signs of wear and/or age. No foxing. Unclipped dust jackets with little fading, some tears and chips. Volumes have previous owners bookplate on front endsheet. First volume signature on front endsheet, dedication on flyleaf. Not an ex-library, book club or remainder copy. Multivolume set; S&H will be adjusted.

I will gladly provide more details of each volume - please inquire.

'The Second World War' is one of my best selling titles, for a reason! It's a superbly written, carefully researched set with deep insights into the conduct of WW2.

This is the definitive, Nobel Prize–winning history of World War II, universally acknowledged as a magnificent historical reconstruction and an enduring work of literature

Seldom, if ever, has history endowed a statesman with both singular ability to make history, and singular ability to write it. As with so much of what Churchill wrote, The Second World War is not "history" in the strictly academic, objectivist sense, but rather Churchill's perspective on history. In his March 1948 introduction to the first volume, Churchill himself made the disclaimer, "I do not describe it as history... it is a contribution to history..." Nonetheless the compelling fact remains, as stated by Churchill himself, "I am perhaps the only man who has passed through both the two supreme cataclysms of recorded history in high Cabinet office... I was for more than five years in this second struggle with Germany the Head of His Majesty's government. I write, therefore, from a different standpoint and with more authority than was possible in my earlier books." Certainly The Second World War may be regarded as an intensely personal and inherently biased history. Nonetheless, Churchill's work remains essential, iconic, and a vital part of the historical record. Richard Langworth calls the six-volume epic "indispensable reading for anyone who seeks a true understanding of the war that made us what we are today."

While most historians are removed from their subjects, Winston Churchill composed most of The Second World War as the war unfolded, while he was the Prime Minister of Great Britain. Churchill intended to write a history of the war from the time he took office in 1940, often saying, "I will leave judgments on this matter to history-but I will be one of the historians." Throughout the war, Churchill compiled important documents weekly and wrote out his opinions on the significance of each.

From Britain's darkest and finest hour to the great alliance and ultimate victory, the Second World War remains the most pivotal event of the twentieth century. Winston Churchill was not only the war's greatest leader, he was the free world's singularly eloquent voice of defiance in the face of Nazi tyranny, and it's that voice that animates this six-volume history. Remarkable both for its sweep and for its sense of personal involvement, it begins with The Gathering Storm; moves on to Their Finest Hour, The Grand Alliance, The Hinge of Fate, and Closing the Ring; and concludes with Triumph and Tragedy.

Sobran blinked and swayed. For a second he saw what he knew--gilt, paint and varnish, the sculpted labial eye of a church statue. Then he swooned while still walking forward, and the angel stood quickly to catch him." Once he gets over his shock, Sobran decides that Xas, the male angel, is his guardian sent to counsel him on everything from marriage to wine production. But Xas turns out to be a far more… Read More

v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
