1496 Carcano Incunable Jewish Medici Banking Montes Pietas Franciscan Economics

Michael de Carcano was a 15th-century Franciscan preacher who is best remembered for his role in the establishment of the 'Montes Pietas' banking system – a money lending system aimed to reform the corruption of money lending. He also published a collection of sermons, entitled simply 'Sermonium', which, consequently, were given in support of his attempts at loan reform. In his sermons given in Perugia, Carcano adamantly preached against using Jewish money lenders – a stance which would empower those already persecuting Jews. It is speculated that his anti-Semitic sermons were the direct cause of his murder.

This September 1496 printing of 92 Carcano "sermons" was published in Venice by Georgius Arrivabenus and is entirely complete.

George Downing was an Irish preacher and political apologist known for his service under Oliver Cromwell in Scotland. In 1664 he wrote a short political letter describing the details of his arrangement of the acquisition of New York from the Dutch. 'A Discourse', as it is called, was written to clear his own name from any misconduct in the exchange. One of the most notable discussions in this work is a report on the miserable interactions of the Dutch settlers with local Indian tribes, as well as business and trade in New York.
