About This Item

London: Methuen & Co. , Ltd,. Good+ with no dust jacket. 1923. 1st UK Edition. Hardcover. A good plus hardback in the original attractively decorated green cloth-covered boards. No dust-jacket. Titling/decoration a little dulled on the spine, but all readable/viewable. The rear cover is very patchy, a couple of light marks to the front, and some small (now neatly repaired) splits to the inner spine edges of the cloth only, with some light rubbing to the corners/head of the spine. Contents Excellent - Very Good, clean and tight inside with NO Inscriptions or Marks. (xxii) + 360pp. Black and white photographic frontispiece, and decorated Title page with a wood-cut. 16 b/w plates (some with multi images) . "A detailed description of the gardens of the Elizabethan upper classes. The author describes the history and evolution of the Elizabethan garden, its plants, contemporary writers (Shakespeare, et al) and their sources (The Italian Renaissance; The Indian Mughal garden, etc). A complete list of flowers and plants mentioned by Shakespeare is given, with botanical identification, and, under 22 headings, the author also describes the design of stately and small formal gardens including the making of knots, pleached alleys, mounts, terraces, seats, hedges, - also potpourri...etc, etc" . A delight for any Gardener and/or Shakespeare 'buff'. Despite the 'flaws' as noted above, this a most attractive and fascinating book. See Images; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
