About This Item
Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1945; First Edition; 8vo, 64 pages; green cloth; gilt spine, gilt front board graphics, red topstain. Thomas Mann’s compelling novella on the life of Moses, which first appeared in 1943 as part of a larger collection of ten novellas grouped together and edited by literary agent Armin L. Robinson under the title "The Ten Commandments, Ten Short Novels Of Hitler’s War Against The Moral Code," and published by Simon and Schuster. Each story was written by a different author from around the world, each of whom was assigned an individual Commandment, the overall purpose being that of an international condemnation of Nazi atrocities. Mann was assigned the First Commandment, which he entitled "Das Gesetz," ("The Law" in German). In 1945 Alfred A. Knopf published Mann’s novella separately here, in book form, entitled "The Tables Of The Law." Book design by Paul Rand, translation into English by Helen T. Lowe-Porter. Fine, in a Fine dust jacket that has a miniscule wrinkle at the upper left corner of the front panel.
