Spines have five raised bands, red morocco title labels, compartments ornately decorated in gilt. Some marking and slight worming to boards. Spines rubbed with slight wear to head and foot. A couple of volumes have slight cracking to joints but all boards are firmly attached. Gilt decorated board edges and turn-ins. All page edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Very tight bindings in excellent overall condition. Clean pages throughout. French language. All 30 plates are present and in first class condition (one plate in Vol. V has been bound in upside down.) London: John Wilkie, 1775. 2nd Edition . Very Good Plus. 5 x 8.25 inches (13 x 21 cm). Recent quarter black morocco leather binding with marbled boards. Spine has five raised bands and gilt title. Light staining to lower corner of first few pages, half title page has three small holes to the inner margin and an ink spot, small mark and hole to outside margin of title page, a couple of light marks elsewhere but text is generally in very clean condition throughout. A couple of text pages have slight loss to the margins, page 39/40 has a tear to the centre of the page with very slight loss (no loss to text), there are also a few corrections to the text in old ink (these are not noted in the errata.) Leaves C3 and C4 (pages 13-16) are very tightly cropped to the outer margin, on p13 the text runs right to the edge of the page but is complete. Midnight blue half-sheepskin binding, embossed percaline covers, spines have gilt titles and decoration. Illustrated with hand coloured / hand finished engraved plates. These were created by the leading illustrators of the time, including Duverger, L. Markaert, R. King. The bindings are in very good condition, with a little rubbing to the edges only. Inside, the text and plates have light foxing throughout, but are overall in very good condition. Each copy online offers a different number of plates for each of the four volumes - but our copy seems to match the maximum collation for each variation (so seems complete.) The index is of limited use, as it only lists a proportion of the plates.
